The Himalayan nation's Political Scene Witnesses Significant Partnership Formed Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of next year's general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The late summer uprising was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership

According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the nation's established political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Discussions Underway

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with several major political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
