2K Games has appointed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the development team at 31st Union, which is currently working on the forthcoming third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
Leadership Transition Follows Poor Response
Brinkman takes on the leadership position at 31st Union following the departure of previous head Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to the game's lackluster initial reveal last fall.
Recently, the company's top executive a key figure notified staff about this strategic move through an official communication, which stressed that early feedback sessions had revealed the requirement for a clearer direction.
Ismailer noted that the team is now refining the project with a revised focus, aiming to better meet gamer demands.
Trend of Key Hires
The news mirrors a similar step taken by the publisher in August, when they hired an industry veteran from the Diablo team to contribute to the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the complete content from Ismailer's announcement:
Hello Everyone—
I know you all just completed your gathering - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the good news. Last time I sent you all a message, I expressed the following: “I am confident in this team. You all are some of the most dedicated and talented developers we have had the opportunity to partner with - and we’re eager for that collaboration to endure.”
With your dedication and adaptability, especially over the last year, you continue to prove that.
The community feedback from last fall’s the game demo was revealing. It validated the promise of a action-packed game but indicated we still had work to do. It uncovered the requirement for a more distinct vision.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve progressed. You took the feedback to heart and overhauled the title with a revitalized direction - one that’s poised to deliver on its ambition to our players.
The belief in this project strengthens every day. To boost the incredible progress you’ve made, I am thrilled to announce Ben Brinkman as the latest Studio Head of 31st Union. After some time of discussions, he starts with us on Monday, October 20.
Ben’s guidance and background in the competitive gaming genre is considerable, having spent the recent years producing and overseeing some of the most popular franchises in the industry, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and lately, the battle royale hit.
I invite you all in receiving Ben in the coming days. We are all excited to persist seeing the evolution of the game in the time to ahead.
The President
Experience of the New Leader
The appointee currently holds the role of executive producer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. Brinkman previously was employed at major gaming companies in multiple development positions on the Call of Duty games, and, prior to that, had assignments at 2K and Electronic Arts.
Game Information and Vision
The upcoming game was unveiled in October 2024 together with a community playtest. At the time, 31st Union presented the game as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an innovative evolution on the category."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the official summary reads. "Take on the competition with unique powers, stakes, and tests that change every session. Will you leave securely with your collected items? Or go big, gamble everything, and pray your team can achieve the highest spot? The choice is yours."
The game does not have an official release date or supported systems, but players can expect additional details as production advances.
