The English along with Welsh Pitted Together for the 2027 World Cup in Australia

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The group draw was conducted by sporting icons such as former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side together with their Welsh counterparts have been drawn in the same pool for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, setting up a major early clash in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw recalls their famous meeting in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at England's home ground played a part in the English team's surprise group stage elimination.

Key Pool Draws

Ireland and Scotland also share a group once again, replicating the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. In that tournament, Ireland secured a convincing victory, with Scotland failing to advance to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, both made a strong impression as underdogs in the last World Cup, round out that Pool D.

Notably, the victors of both Pool D and Pool F cannot meet holders and world number one the Springboks until the final, presuming the Springboks top their assigned pool.

Knockout Implications

Should the groups conclude according to the current world rankings, further leading contenders like New Zealand and France would also be kept apart from both England and the Irish all the way to the final.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the remaining top-ranked nation on that side of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Hosts Face Major Opener

Tournament hosts Australia find themselves together with their trans-Tasman rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Pool A.

Australia will open the tournament in the city of Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee match designed to jump-start the event.

In other groups, holders South Africa have drawn Italy, the Lelos and the Oaks. France are grouped with Japan, future hosts the USA and Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Argentina will take on the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and Canada as the World Cup grows to twenty-four nations from the 20 who took part in France.

This edition will introduce a round of 16 stage for the first time in the competition's history.

While the victor of England and Wales's group may be kept apart from some of the rugby's biggest beasts early on, they will have to face the second-placed team from Group B – most likely the Italians – in the last 16.

A total of four of the other six pool winners will play a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
