New research indicates that people who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People using these medications should be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Experts propose the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the medication report a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced something flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled one woman.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Use is greater among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
