European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
