Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opener Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Ben Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in multiple conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his message to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

But, after the opener made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

This means, the home team require four wickets on the final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – after England losing the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a formidable team. It was inevitably tough coming here against them. They entered as the favourites and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term place in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

But, Crawley said any notion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
