RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, identified by surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of approach shafts providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This operation shows British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of British forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of thousands of British personnel stationed over the festive period. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an attack killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
