Colombia's President Says 'I Will Take Up Arms Once More' if American Forces Launches an Attack.

Donald Trump along with his Colombian counterpart have intensified the tone of their war of words, heightening strains in their relations following US forces targeted Venezuela with the aim of deposing President Nicolás Maduro from his position.

"He has cocaine mills and production sites and that won't last much longer," Trump added.

Rising Tensions coupled with Accusations

Addressing the press on Sunday, Trump hinted at similar use of force against Bogotá, claiming the country faces serious problems and governed by an unwell individual involved in producing the drug and selling it to America."

Although Colombia remains the world’s largest cocaine-producing country, no proof exists linking President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is directly involved in the business.

A Deteriorating Alliance

This nation for decades served as a key ally of Washington in the struggle against drug trafficking and benefited from cross-party backing in Washington, but relations have deteriorated significantly after Trump came to office.

Colombia’s illicit drug economy is predominantly run by criminal organizations such as one major cartel, another leftist insurgency and renegade units of the former Farc guerrillas, most of its former fighters laid down arms following a historic peace agreement.

Petro's Firm Answer

In response to a query whether armed intervention similar to Venezuela was on the cards against his country, Trump responded: "That seems like a good idea from my perspective."

President Petro, an ex-guerrilla fighter who demobilised in the last century, categorically refuted these allegations. "I am not illegitimate nor am I a drug trafficker," he declared.

"Trump speaks without knowledge. Stop slandering me," he wrote in a message.

"If they [the US] bomb rural communities, they will turn into a multitude of fighters in the mountains. And should they arrest me, whom many of the country holds in high esteem, they will provoke the powerful force of the people," Petro warned.

From Fighter to Statesman

He passed a period in his early life participating in the left-wing M-19 armed organization although reports indicate to have ever engaged in fighting. After demobilizing, he took part in drafting the constitutional rewrite in 1991 subsequently becoming a prominent senator. He served as mayor of the Colombian capital prior to his election the nation's highest office.

"I pledged to abstain from using arms again ... but in defense of my country I shall resume the fight," he said.

Heightened Measures along with Widespread Condemnation

Colombia's defense chief reported that the president’s personal security was strengthened.

Many among Colombia’s conservative opposition have allied themselves with Trump's stance, yet figures from all sides of the ideological divide have condemned the notion of American military action against their nation.

Political and Economic Pressure

American authorities revoked his travel authorization following he urged US troops to disobey unlawful commands. Months later, it placed asset freezes on Petro, his spouse and several close collaborators.

Simultaneously while America bolstered its forces in the Caribbean and targeting suspected drug boats to put pressure on Venezuela’s Maduro, the US executed operations on maritime targets in the eastern Pacific region near Colombia.
