A minimum of 13 passengers perish and ninety-eight hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the national leader.

The president announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's strategic goals for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The construction of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its role in national projects. They were executed at an accelerated pace, surpassing expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled persistent apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party demanded an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This halt was suggested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."

In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these national undertakings.
